Dumpster Diving for cars...

Well, I hate to admit it, but I have officially become a true Memphian...I went dumpster diving! Now we were introduced to dumpster diving in our first days in Memphis. Everytime we put something out on the street for the garbage truck, unless it is truly trash (hard to define, apparently), it rarely lasts more than a few hours. For example, our 1950's-era NuTone countertop stove/oven combo was one of the first things we got rid of. It lasted one afternoon. The old kitchen sink, less than 3 hours. Old gutters (bent and broken) lasted less than 1 hour. The list goes on, but I'll stop here. Just believe me when I say, one man's trash is definitely another man's treasure here in Memphis.

Well, I did not think I would fall into the "treasure" category until the othe day. I was driving to a friends house for a quick visit and to return a dish (she brought us dinner after Chisolm was born). Toodling along High Point Terrace I couldn't believe what I saw, a huge pile of "trash" with a Little Tykes Cozy Coupe red and yellow car on top! This is a toy I've wanted to get Louisa for ages. Her friend, Blake, has one and when we go over there, she won't ever get out of it. I've searched high and low at yard sales, on craigs list, everywhere to no avail. I couldn't believe my eyes. I literally slammed on the breaks, left the car running in the middle of the street and ran over to grab the car. I have to admit, I was slightly embarrassed about dumpster diving, this being my first time and all, so I grabbed the car, threw it in the back of my car, and drove off as quickly as possible. I have to admit, it was exciting! A thrill, a rush, and an awesome find! The car definitely needed some clean up, but after scrubbing it with a bucket of clorox water and sitting out in the sun for a few hours, it was good to go. Louisa has enjoyed that car everyday since we acquired it! Here are some pictures:

Louisa walking the car to the sidewalk. Somtimes she likes to push it, sometimes she likes to ride in it...
Time to drive the car!
Gotta see where you are going, you don't want to crash this puppy...
Love this car!
